Itasca County's Image

In 1850, the census recorded only 97 people living in Itasca County. Probably trappers in isolated cabins at that point. Itasca County was one of nine original counties in the state of Minnesota. Before the state was officially recognized in 1858, Itasca was attached ito Morrison County, St.Louis County and Crow Wing County before becoming an identity of its own in 1891.

What started as a few pines along Pokegama, became lumber camps for many settlers on all edges of Itasca County. To this day, with a total population of 46,530, our county holds pride in our lakes, pines and beauty that once attracted so many to settle here.
