Action Team Report Back Meeting

Itasca Economic Development Corporation
April 11th, 2007

Present: Steve Arbour, Chris Van Den Heuvel, Peter McDermott, Teri Heikkila

Reports were given as follows:

Air Service

  • Establish an economically viable scheduled air service at the Grand Rapids/Itasca County Airport

Team member Chris Van Den Heuvel reporting

The results of the air service survey, gathered from 20 participating companies, were compiled and presented to the Blandin Foundation, Rapids Air Service and the IEDC Board of Directors. Neither the Blandin Foundation nor Rapids Air Service was interested in pursuing a plan to bring in air service based on the survey results.

An option still being investigated is Midwest Airlines of Milwaukee WI. The company flies a Dornier 328 jet to Duluth. The Air Service Action Team will be contacting them to see if they would be interested in adding a flight to Grand Rapids also.

Blandin Paper & Retention

  • Help position the Blandin Paper Mill as a preferred expansion site for UPM

Steve Arbour reporting

The Blandin Paper Action Team reported that $5 million has been included on a bill to advance the Wastewater Treatment Facility. The upgrade to the wastewater treatment facility is necessary for Blandin Paper before they can receive the required permits for the Thunderhawk Project. There is no news on the project’s approval or timing.

Wireless Communications Action Team

  • Ensure local zoning ordinances are in line with wireless communication needs of the Itasca area

No report was given for the Wireless Communication team; however chair Lorrie Yeschick noted that a meeting would be held April 12th to compare Itasca County’s regulations with the surrounding counties. The goal is to make sure Itasca County is not restricting wireless coverage/services by zoning regulations that have not been brought up to date.

No reports were given for the Mesaba Energy and Minnesota Steel Action Teams.
